A Concussion Is Nothing To Laugh About.

A Traumatic Head Injury, or Concussion, is a serious condition. Common symptoms include headaches, dizziness, nausea, blurred vision, balance problems, forgetfulness, irritability, anxiety, and a variety of other symptoms.

You have been diagnosed by your medical provider with a traumatic brain injury (TBI), otherwise known as a concussion. Common symptoms include headaches, dizziness, nausea, blurred vision, balance problems, forgetfulness, irritability, anxiety, and a variety of other symptoms.

It is important to remember that the symptoms of most brain injuries can be improved with specific rehabilitation, just like injuries to muscles or joints. During your TBI rehab if you experience any increases in dizziness, nausea, heart rate, or feelings of confusion or irritability, let our providers or staff know immediately. While most patients will not experience these types of side effects, when they do occur it is important to not be alarmed, as it simply means we need to take things a bit more slowly.

Treatment Options

The following TBI rehab therapies have been prescribed as a part of your treatment protocol:

Alpha Stim

This technology uses small clips on the earlobes to increase alpha waves to the brain. These are the brain waves that are produced in deep thought and restful states. Alpha stim has been shown to be very effective with symptoms of brain injury as well as anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder.

Infrared Light Therapy

Low level infrared light stimulates blood flow to the outer portions of the brain, and can help accelerate brain healing.

Exercise with Oxygen

Concentrated oxygen is administered while engaging in light aerobic exercise. By increasing the levels of oxygen to the brain, studies have found that this treatment can be beneficial for recovery from TBI.

Vagus Nerve Stimulation

The vagus nerve is stimulated with gentle microcurrent to a part of the ear called the tragus. Stimulating this nerve is particularly beneficial with headaches, as well as other TBI symptoms.

Cognitive Rehabilitation

The brain can be exercised like a muscle, and after a brain injury this becomes even more important. We utilize computerized “brain exercise” software that is both challenging and fun while helping to improve memory, verbal recall, and other areas often affected by TBI.

HRV Biofeedback

Heart rate variability (HRV) is a measure of how well your autonomic nervous system responds to stress, and this is often altered following brain injury. HRV biofeedback therapy connects a sensor to the finger that helps normalize HRV.

Traumatic Brain Injury — Coastal Integrative Healthcare FAQs

Here are 15 most frequently asked questions by patients before visiting our clinic

A traumatic brain injury occurs when a sudden blow, jolt, or impact to the head disrupts normal brain function. TBIs can range from mild concussions to more severe brain injuries.

Common symptoms include headaches, dizziness, nausea, blurred vision, balance problems, memory issues, fatigue, mood changes, and difficulty concentrating.

TBIs are most commonly caused by falls, car accidents, sports injuries, and blows to the head during accidents or physical trauma.

A concussion is considered a mild form of traumatic brain injury. While many concussions heal with proper care, they still require medical evaluation and monitoring.

Recovery varies depending on the severity of the injury. Some mild TBIs improve within days or weeks, while more significant injuries may require months of rehabilitation.

Warning signs include worsening headaches, repeated vomiting, confusion, slurred speech, seizures, difficulty walking, or unusual behavior. These symptoms require immediate medical attention.

Yes. Some individuals experience persistent symptoms such as headaches, memory issues, fatigue, or mood changes for weeks or months after the injury.

Diagnosis typically involves a physical exam, neurological assessment, symptom evaluation, and sometimes imaging tests such as CT scans or MRI.

Treatment may include neurological rehabilitation, cognitive therapy, light therapy, oxygen therapy, biofeedback, and other therapies designed to support brain recovery.

Cognitive rehabilitation involves exercises and therapies designed to improve memory, concentration, and mental processing after a brain injury.

Vagus nerve stimulation uses gentle electrical stimulation to influence the nervous system and may help reduce headaches and other symptoms associated with brain injuries.

Yes. Carefully supervised exercise can improve blood flow and oxygen delivery to the brain, which may support healing and neurological recovery.

Heart Rate Variability (HRV) biofeedback helps regulate the body’s stress response and autonomic nervous system, which can become disrupted after a traumatic brain injury.

You should seek medical care if you experience symptoms such as confusion, dizziness, severe headaches, nausea, or any neurological symptoms after a head injury.

Treatment options may include therapies such as Alpha Stim therapy, infrared light therapy, oxygen-assisted exercise, vagus nerve stimulation, cognitive rehabilitation, and HRV biofeedback to support brain recovery.
